Abstract:
This article explores four novels by R.K. Narayan, which depict the lives of female protagonists who emerge from conventional Indian society but achieve social standing within their communities. The novels highlight the balance between radical feminism and traditional societal expectations placed on women, with traditional women cultivating stoicism to enhance their mental strength and shield them from tension and conflict.
These bold women navigate through the orthodox milieu of Indian society by challenging societal norms and expectations, while also embracing their cultural heritage and values. Narayan's portrayal of these female characters allows readers to witness their resilience and determination in the face of adversity, ultimately paving the way for a more nuanced understanding of gender roles in Indian society. As these women assert their agency and carve out their own paths, they inspire readers to question and challenge the rigid gender norms that have long defined their society. Through these narratives, Narayan sheds light on the complexities of being a woman in a traditional society, while also celebrating the strength and resilience of those who dare to defy convention.
